Livingston Aldermen have approved a resolution to address concerns about the condition of the town’s post office.
Ray Evans is the Chairman of the Downtown Revitalization Committee. He said the resolution allows Mayor Curtis Hayes to approach the U.S. Postal Service about making repairs to the building.
“We’ve had numerous folks from the community express to us their sadness in how the post office has been maintained over the past many years,” Evans said. “We’ve got rusted rails and peeling paint. Julia Bishop made a pretty intense effort in communicating with the post master trying to encourage them to do maintenance on the exterior of the building. To this point, the only thing that has happened is the flag pole got painted.”
The city contacted Congressman John Rose about their concerns with the building. Mayor Hayes said he believes work will begin soon after having previous discussions with the post master.
“A work order has been turned in to his supervisor in North Carolina,” Hayes said. “So we think progress has already started, as far as the process of renovating the exterior part of the post office. But this (resolution) right here certainly doesn’t hurt to go ahead and pass.”
“As much money as we’ve invested in downtown Livingston, I think it’s important that everybody be a partner of it,” Hayes said. As many grants for facades that we gave out, they (post office) could have been a part of that, but just haven’t done it. The folks at the post office are certainly on board and want to do their part to make downtown even more attractive.”
Alderman Ronald Dishman said he would also like to see the building brought up to ADA standards.
The board unanimously approved the resolution during Monday night’s meeting.
