The Livingston Academy Wildcats are splitting starting quarterback snaps between Isaiah Honeycutt and Kaden Weitzel and opponents are taking notice.
With their week one starter Adrian Jenkins re-injuring his collarbone in week four, head coach Matthan Houser had to change up the offense. Houser said when it came to replacing Jenkins, he looked in the direction of their best athlete, Kaden Weitzel.
“I don’t think that Kaden has ever shied away from having confidence,” Houser said. “He is very confident in what he does. He leads us in receiving, he leads us in rushing, he’s got a lot of passing yards, he leads us in kick returns and he leads us in tackles. He’s just a very confident kid and confident in his ability and it shows in how he plays the game on Friday nights.”
And in his first “start” Weitzel flashed his ability on the ground scoring a 36 yard touchdown on a read option run in the 2nd quarter against Pickett County in week 5. Opposing coach for York Institute, Derwin Wright said facing a team that will utilize two different styles of quarterback is a change in a normal week’s preparation.
“Both those guys are pretty good quarterbacks,” Wright said. “I know that’s not their starting quarterback, but both of them are good athletes and from what I saw they were doing a good job.”
In his sophomore season, Honeycutt was not expected to see much playing time under center, but nonetheless has been thrown into that role. Houser said that while Weitzel brings an athletic edge to the position, Honeycutt is a cerebral player.
“Isaiah being a sophomore, a young kid, I thought he did good of managing early on,” Houser said. “We didn’t execute as good as we could have, but he really works hard and does the little things you ask him to do.”
Houser said he and the coaching staff have had to re-tool their offense to fit Honeycutt and Weitzel’s strength’s and he is excited to see where the offense ends up this season.
