Keeping Children Aware An Important Factor Of National Preparedness Month

Children are one of the most important demographics to keep prepared in the event of a natural disaster.

That is according to Jackson County EMA Public Information Officer Derek Woolbright. September is National Preparedness Month, and Woolbright said kids need to stay in the loop.

“The big thing is educating them on what the likely disasters they may face are,” Woolbright said. “Especially in our county here in Jackson County, flooding is a very common issue.”

Woolbright said children have lived through fewer disasters, so they are more likely to panic in a situation. Woolbright said families should discuss and establish emergency meeting locations, so a child knows what to do next.

“When it comes to being prepared, it is just being aware of the weather,” Woolbright said. “Being aware of the possibility of strong storms. Being aware of the possibility of heavy rain. That itself allows you to be more prepared.”

Woolbright said supplies and exit strategies are also important when keeping a family a safe and prepared. Woolbright said each person is familiar with what is common in their area, so research the best preparedness kit for yourself.
