Jimmy Maynord Announces Retirement As CHS Head Football Coach

After 42 years as an assistant and head coach, Cookeville High School Head Football Coach Jimmy Maynord will retire.

Maynord said by his count he has been a part of nearly 500 games. Maynord said it has been a great career, with a lot of great teams.

“I’ve always heard you know when it’s time and I believe that,” Maynord said. “I didn’t necessarily believe it when I was hearing it years back. I know it’s time, I know it’s time to do something different, and that was the deciding factor.”

Maynord said his first priority when stepping away is to focus on family. However, Maynord said he still cannot rule out helping with coaching in the future if the desire is still there.

Maynord said the decision did not have anything to do with this season.

“I had decided that it was going to be my last year anyway before we even got into that,” Maynord said. “But I didn’t go at it any different than any other year. We worked just as hard, our coaches worked just as hard, our players worked just as hard.”

Maynord said when you’ve been at it as long as he has, you take each season at a time to consider your future.

“It was just time for me to let somebody else move in here,” Maynord said. “And maybe rejuvenate things a little bit and see what happens.”

Maynord will retire with a 234-126 overall head coaching record in stops at White County, Upperman, Smith County and Cookeville. Maynord has been with Cookeville for the last nine seasons.
