Jackson Citizen Wants Speed Limit Lowered On Indian Creek Road

A Jackson County resident asked County Commissioners Monday to erect speed limit signs on Indian Creek Road.

Linda Lewis also proposed lowering the speed limit to 40mph. Lewis said there is an issue with large trucks carrying dirt, rock and gravel speeding up their road.

“We’ve had several incidents of people going off the road into the creek which is very, very dangerous,” Lewis said. “We’ve also had people who are almost hit head on. We’ve got pick up trucks and cars and trucks going through people’s yards.”

Jackson County Road Superintendent Preacher Anderson said the department doesn’t have the funding for such a project, and that they also don’t have the resources to enforce it.

A motion was made to table the issue, to allow for more research into the subject. County Mayor Randy Heady said they want to ensure they’re doing all they can with what resources are available to better the community.

The commission also heard from American Legion representatives Roger Dale and Richard Accurso asking that the commissioners consider a $600 pay raise for their future Veterans Service Officer replacement.

Clay and Jackson Counties are searching for a replacement Veterans Service Officer following the resignation of Bob Cole, citing health reasons. Cole had served in the position for six years, and Dale said he did a great deal of work finding money for veterans in Clay and Jackson.

Heady said the budget committee has discussed the prospect of a raise, and is taking it into consideration.

The commission approved several budget amendments, including moving around budgeted funds for county employee overtime, COVID funding to be used at the airport, and new video equipment for the general sessions court.

Heady said the county plans to have first budget workshop session the first Monday of August, and plan on finalizing the budget at a meeting on the second Monday in August.
