Recent above average rainfall and high winds in the Upper Cumberland create conditions causing an increase in downed limbs and fallen trees.
Allen’s Tree Service owner Bryan Cook said to look for low lying areas that hold water and exposed root balls at the base of the tree. These trees are more likely to be pushed over by winds.
“The ground is obviously going to be saturated in certain areas, which will make the surface weak, and the root system won’t run as deep,” Cook said. “The winds can move the trees in any direction they want to.”
If a tree has a limb with no foliage, this is a sign the limb is dead, and the tree should be trimmed.
Cook said homeowners should be mindful of trees surrounding their homes during these times.
“Homeowners need to be aware of acts of God,” Cook said. “There are large trees that do tower over homes, and the winds definitely play a part in damage.”
Cook said removing decaying trees is a protection measure to lower risk of injuries and damage during storms.
