Overton County Director Of Schools Donnie Holman said he believes the county will receive money to upgrade school security.
How much and when remain question marks.
Holman told the school board during a Tuesday work session he had been told a possible amount Tuesday, but he did not want to repeat it because it could be very wrong. Holman said school officials will begin examining possible best uses for the money.
“One good option would be to do something to I’m going to use this term to kind of make our glass, our windows and our doors somewhat bulletproof,” Holman said. “And there is a product out there now that we can use. It’s produced by the company Three M. You can put this film on the glass on the windows and the doors, and it pretty much makes them bulletproof. I’ve already gone to a demonstration of it…very impressive.”
Governor Bill Lee implemented new resources with legislative approval following the Nashville school shooting this spring.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the School Board approved the Memorandum of Understandings for school resource officers. The memorandum sets up guidelines between the school system and the Livingston Police Department and the Overton County Sheriffs Department. The state will now pay for those SROs.
The board approved the School System’s Salary Schedule for the new year, effective July 1. It includes the state-mandated increase to minimum salaries, resulting in an increase of $592,000 in spending. The board also approved the support staff schedule.
The board will gather a bit more information on its updated coaching supplement schedule, tabling that topic until next month.
