Hilham School Walking Trail Seeing Delays

The Hilham School walking trail will not be completed before the new school year.

Overton County Executive Ben Danner said the project may not begin until 2020.

“All these paving companies are all covered up through the end of the year. So we may have to schedule with them to do it the first of next year,” Danner said. “But we still got that grant two years to complete that. We are still doing that and I was hoping to have it done before school started back, but that has just not worked out.”

Danner said the county received a $20,000 Healthy Built Environment Grant for the walking trail in June.

“Maybe, we might try to shoot for fall break which is probably the last time this year we can do it,” Danner said. “But I don’t know if any of the companies will be able to do it then or not. So it may be into next year, early. But it is still coming though.”

Danner said the actual project will wrap up quickly.

“It shouldn’t really take that long. I mean, just setting it up getting ready to pave. Then they could pave it all in a day, I’m sure,” Danner said. “And the highway department might help to try to get some of it set up to start with and then get somebody to come in and pave it. So we just have to see on that.”

Overton County decided to create a walking trail around the playground after learning Hilham School has one of the highest obesity rates in the county.
