Overton County hopes to address workforce needs with a $50,000 ThreeStar Grant.
County Executive Ben Danner said the funding will help create a new plumbing and HVAC program at TCAT Livingston.
“We were working with Myra West at TCAT and they talk like that will probably be enough to get everything they need to start that new program,” Danner said. “It’s exciting because we have a lot of people come to Livingston TCAT, but they have to go to other places to do the HVAC and plumbing. It will be good to have that program right here in Livingston.”
The State Department of Economic and Community Development awarded the grant to Overton County earlier this month. Danner said the new program would help address a shortage of such positions across the region.
“There’s some other needs, like CDL’s for truckers, but we thought this would be the best bang for the buck,” Danner said. “There’s a shortage of HVAC and plumbers, so maybe we can get some people from Livingston and the Upper Cumberland trained. Those are really good-paying jobs.”
The state awarded $2.4 million to 59 Tennessee communities through this round of the ThreeStar grant program.
