Gilley Pool’s First Weekend Open: A Success

McMinnville’s Gilley Pool reopened Saturday with no issues.

The pool opened from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a temporary closure for cleaning. Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Justin Scott said about 300 visitors filtered through the gates on the first day.

“So far it’s been pretty good,” Scott said. “Everybody has been compliant and we’ve just been trying to get them in as quickly as we can so we can get them in there and let them have fun. It’s been a good starting weekend.”

Scott said a COVID-19 symptoms sign, swim attire guidelines, and temperature checks are some of the precautionary measures pool staff are implementing.

While the opening process is successful, Scott said he’d still like to see some tweaks and changes.

“I would love to see there being lesser restrictions and for us to be able to open it up more,” Scott said. “Not just for our community, but beyond. That’s what I’m used to, that’s what I’m accustomed to. I’ve been over the pool for about 15 years now and I’m used to seeing people coming from everywhere. [But] I know it’s what was decided and we will follow directions.”

Scott said depending on staff availability and the city board, the pool could remain open past the return to school date August 12.

The pool is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. On Sundays the pool is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
