As the business of putting the pieces back together after Tuesday’s tornado begins, funeral homes will be on the front lines of grief.
Hooper, Huddleston, and Horner’s Jill Horner says the process of helping someone say goodbye to a loved one has to begin delicately.
“The first thing we do is try to make people feel comfortable and at ease,” Horner said. “That’s hard to do after you’ve had such a tragic loss, but just to be able to relax and just share the stories is helpful.”
Horner said that gently approaching people and putting them at ease helps the process of planning the next steps.
“Really we want to greet people and, honestly, just treat them the way we would want to be treated in that situation,” Horner said. “Just kind of sitting down and listening to what they need to say, sometimes that’s just thing we can start out with is just to listen to what their needs are and direct them based on what they tell us.”
Horner suggested people struggling to reach out to one of the many support groups in the region.
“One in particular is Heart of the Cumberland,” Horner said. “They are planning some grief support groups. It’s a safe place and a safe environment.”
