Final Deadline For Delinquent 2020 Property Taxes Comes Thursday

The deadline to submit your 2020 delinquent property taxes in Cookeville comes this Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

City Clerk Darian Coons said he recommends coming in-person to pay for delinquent payments.

“One of the things they might forget is if they have their house on a lot and then they have a separate lot possibly for a side yard. Sometimes folks forget to pay for that extra lot that they have,” Coons said.

Coons said mailing payments is also an option, but residents face a risk of delivery delays. Coons said payments must be physically in hand by the end of the day. Coons said the payments will be delivered to the county’s Clerk and Master the next morning.

‘We’ve been seeing some folks come in to pay their delinquent taxes,” Coons said. “We sent a final notice right at the beginning of March, and we tried to put put a big, pink sticker to try to get folks’ attention.”

Coons said you can also pay online at the state’s trustee website. Coons said 2020 payments started collecting interest when the deadline passed in February of 2021. Coons said the clerk’s office then holds the property taxes for 13 months and turns them over in April to the Clerk and Master for collections.
