A compromise was reached between Fentress County Commissioners and Highway Department on a road improvement loan.
County Executive Jimmy Johnson said $800,000 was approved by the commission. Johnson said 44 roads will get improvements under the modified plan.
“It’s going to be good to some folks who have lived on some rough roads so several years now,” Johnson said. “So this here hopefully, Mr. Reagan and his department will be able to get them where they have a better road to drive on.”
Johnson said $700,000 was saved in the compromise, with only 10 roads getting cut out of the improvement plan. Johnson said the commission stated it wants to help the highway department improve those 10 roads during its next term.
“Commissioner Kim Davidson asked if they could help him to do 44 roads and leave out the 10 roads that he had on there,” Johnson said. “These top 10 roads was going to do a full out paving job. That there, he (Joey Reagan) said it was $100,000 per mile.”
Johnson said reaching a compromise is a huge benefit to the county, all the way around compared to being stuck at a standstill. He said gravel roads will be improved to tar and chip, tar and chip roads will be improved to coal mix asphalt.
