Engineers Recommend Solutions For Livingston Flooding

Livingston may have found a fix to the flooding problem at Dillon Pond.

Mayor Curtis Hayes said Nashville-based Barge Design Group has suggested two possible solutions.

“One is to continue doing updates and maintenance to our existing standpipe that is also known as a sinkhole and is located on the West side of Winningham Nature Park and the pond,” Hayes said. “Another issue was to try to lower the water level of the pond so we could hold more water in the event that we had a 100-year flood.”

Dillon Pond overflowed during a heavy rain event earlier this year. The record flooding caused Bradford Hicks Drive and Highway 52 to close for multiple days. Several nearby homes and businesses also suffered damage.

Livingston hired Barge Design Group this summer and asked them to recommend plans to mitigate any future flooding. Hayes said the city will soon meet with TDEC to discuss the company’s suggestions.

“Hopefully, in the next three weeks we can come up with some hardcore answers, and also try do what is the most affordable for the city,” Hayes said. “The simple solution, if given permission from TDEC, would be to simply lower the level of the pond.”

Hayes said some of the recommended construction work could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hayes did not say when he would be meeting with TDEC and Barge Design Group.
