The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said it made an error when recording a small earthquake in White County Monday.
The USGS reported the 2.5 magnitude quake on its data maps Tuesday morning. The maps indicated the earthquake happened at a depth of three miles and just a few hours before a 3.8 magnitude earthquake hit East Tennessee.
Tuesday afternoon, the USGS had removed the Sparta earthquake from its preliminary data maps. A seismologist said an error occurred when a blast at a rock pit near Sparta recorded as an earthquake.
