Early Voting Begins For Sparta Sales Tax Referendum

Early voting got underway Friday for a referendum to increase Sparta’s sales tax.

Election Commissioner Dorcus Marcum said early voting will take place at the White County Courthouse until September 7.

“The question on the ballot will be asking for an increase from 9.25-percent to 9.75-percent,” Marcum said. “It’s just for the City of Sparta.”

City residents can vote early on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Marcum said Tuesday and Thursday voting hours will be from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

“On Saturdays, we’ll be here from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.,” Marcum said. “The only day we will be closed is Sunday and on Labor Day.”

Election day will take place Thursday, September 12 at the Sparta Civic Center and White County Agricultural Community Complex.

Sparta officials voted to for a referendum to take place earlier this year. Mayor Jeff young said the increased revenue from the tax would be earmarked for road and sidewalk improvements.
