Color, Size Affects Choosing A Christmas Tree

With approximately four weeks left until Christmas Eve, celebrators may start the search for the perfect live Christmas tree.

Robert Savage from the Hard Luck Tree Farm said prospective buyers should look at the height, shape, size, and color of the live trees.

“Well, you want it where it looks green, to where it looks like it’s a healthy tree,” Savage said. “Some trees, if they don’t look healthy, you need to stay away from them.”

Savage said each type of tree provides a different Christmas experience.

“Canaan Firs smell really nice and they are a little bit different to put ornaments on. They are a little more spacious between limbs, but once you learn how to decorate them, they are just fine,” Savage said. “The White Pine won’t hold as big of ornaments, but they are real thick as far as the branches and all.”

Savage said the Scotch Pines are strong but a little prickly.

Picking out the tree is only the first step. Savage said owners of live trees should take extra care to maintain their tree’s freshness.

“They need to watch for the praying mantis egg sacks which will be on the underside of the limb. It’s a round, gray pouch,” Savage said. “And all they do is pull them off and put them out under their trees or rose bushes. But they are good to have.”

To protect from potential fire damage, Savage said the people should keep the tree away from heat sources in the home.

“Well the fresh cut trees they definitely need to get them into water pretty quickly,” Savage said. “And if they don’t they have got to make a second cut to where they will take up water from where they seal off.”

Savage said people have many tree options for this Christmas season.
