Sparta’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen have chosen Sergeant Doug Goff as the city’s next police chief.
The decision comes after the city conducted interviews for the position Tuesday.
Goff thanked the Board during Wednesday’s meeting and said he looks forward to continue serving the city in this new capacity.
“I appreciate the board so much for giving me an opportunity to do this and it’s just going to enhance what I’ve been doing,” Goff said. “I started in 1998 in law enforcement. I’ve been a deputy, a school resource officer, a sergeant, an investigator, and now for this next chapter in my life, the chief of police.”
Mayor Jeff Young and Aldermen voted unanimously to approve Goff for the position on Wednesday.
Goff has served with the Sparta Police Department for nearly 13 years. He said that experience will help in transitioning into his new position.
“I’ve had the privilege of being an investigator since 2015. I have an office next to the chief, he and I work closely together, hand-in-hand,” Goff said. “I foresee a smooth transition and I appreciate [Chief Jeff Guth’s] kindness.”
The position became available after current police chief Jeff Guth announced in April that he would retire Aug. 31.
Former sheriff Mark Roloff, of Wisconsin, and Sparta Lieutenant Allen Selby were also considered for the position.
