Don’t Cross The Dam At Meadow Creek Lake Park

Think twice before you attempt to cross the dam at Monterey’s Meadow Creek Lake Park.

Mayor Bill Wiggins said many people don’t seem to pay attention to a ‘No Trespassing’ sign posted at the dam.

“I guess from this point on, when it says ‘No Trespassing’, we can cite them,” Wiggins said. “That’s for our protection as a town. They would not be able to follow through on a lawsuit because it’s posted like it is, but it’s just the aggravation.”

Monterey first addressed the safety issue at the dam two years ago. The city’s insurance carrier recommended posting the signs rather than building a barrier to keep people off the structure.

Wiggins said that effort hasn’t worked as people continue to ignore the rule.

“We already had one lady to fall out there. She refused treatment. Luckily she didn’t sue us. I say luckily…lucky for her because a judge would have tossed it,” Wiggins said. “I was out there the other day and there was a whole family out there. Grandpa had walked through the spillway of all places and it’s slick as glass to go to the other side.”

Wiggins discussed the problem during Monday night’s board of mayor and aldermen meeting. He asked the police department to begin citing people who attempt to cross the dam.
