The Putnam County Regional Planning Commission has once again delayed discussions about possibly creating a countywide zoning code.
Commissioner Dale Moss said the conversation needs to continue but outside the commission’s regular monthly meeting.
“Maybe we need to have a meeting just to get some groundwork started on this zoning,” Moss said. “We don’t have time in our meetings it doesn’t look like. But if we’re gonna try to make this work and get input it’s going to be hard to do it in a meeting.”
Planning Director Kevin Rush said he will look at scheduling a work session so discussions can take place.
Commissioners previously stated they would like to create a simplified zoning code with the least amount of pages as possible. Rush said that recommendation may not be possible.
“I did have a suggestion to move everything but the guts of the zoning to an appendix. I’ve never seen a zoning structured that way and the county attorney did not recommend it becuase he had never seen one structured that way,” Rush said. “He said you need the things like your definitions, supplementary regulations, and general provisions up front so people know what their dealing with then they start reading it. We might be able to shorten it up a little bit, but I don’t know if we’ll be able to take it from a 60 or 80 page document to a 12 or 15 page document.”
The Putnam County Commission voted against a recommendation to establish zoning districts more than 10-years ago. The county has not revisited the issue since that time.
