Cummins Falls Hosts First-Ever Geminids Meteor Shower Event

Cummins Falls State Park is hosting a new nighttime campfire event on Wednesday to celebrate the annual Geminid Meteor Shower.

Park Ranger Jordan Fraley said the event will include hot dogs, s’mores, and a fifteen minute long presentation about the meteor shower. Fraley said the community’s response to the event has been much greater than he expected.

“I think that’s a big thing that people have always enjoyed, just going and looking out at the sky and being like, you know, what’s your place in this world when you have all this, you know, this grand magnitude in front of you?” Fraley said. “I think that’s a big, big thing as well, and why so many people would be interested in coming and seeing it.”

Fraley said this is one of the most active meteor showers to happen each year, usually lasting from 9:00pm to 2:00am. He said the event is recommended for ages ten and up due to the scientific nature of the presentation.

“It’s a good point of reference for understanding, essentially,” Fraley said. “I just want everyone to be able to come and enjoy what I’m talking about and somebody younger wouldn’t necessarily be on the same wavelength as anybody ten and up for this program.”

The event will go from 8:00pm to 10:30pm.

“I’ve capped it off online at fifty people now when I anticipated, you know, I was going to be happy with, you know, like ten people come up, coming to, you know, talk with me about meteors and stuff and us look at the meteors,” Fraley said. “So, as far as that, it’s just kind of amazing how many people are wanting to come out and see this event.”

Fraley said those who have not already signed up online will need to bring $5 per person to attend.

“That just helps us cover the, like, s’mores and hot dogs and stuff that we’ll be providing,” Fraley said.

Fraley said this is the first year the park has hosted an event for this particular meteor shower.
