Cumberland Sanitation Hosting “Trashersize” Cleanup Event

Cumberland County residents have a chance to exercise while beautifying or also called trashersize this Saturday.

Cumberland County Sanitation Litter Prevention and Education Supervisor Carrie Smith said participants will walk a few miles of Peavine Road picking up trash along the way.

“Keep Tennessee Beautiful has brought out this program in hopes that the Great American Cleanup would try to get more people involved in volunteering and cleaning up their county by picking up liter and getting exercise,” Smith said.

Smith said participants can meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Dollar Tree on Peavine Road. Smith said she will have supplies ready for all, so just show up in the appropriate attire.

“It’s not only important for us to try to keep our cities and our roadways clean for our wildlife and our environment, but tourists that come into out area,” Smith said. “They don’t want to come in and see litter all over our roadways.”

Keep Tenneessee Beautiful is the state level affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. The national organization kicked off the Great American Cleanup last month. It will continue until the end of the year.

“I have done one prior at the Crab Orchard Elementary School this year, and we cleaned up the campus and got 904 pounds of liter,” Smith said.

Smith said the cleanup would have different focus areas, so those that do not want to walk can still participate.
