Old Cumberland Courthouse having to close its original 1905 portion due to a portion with hazardous structural integrity.
Mayor Allen Foster said a leak discovery led to structural engineers recommending the closure of that part of the building which houses the County Clerk’s office.
“We call ourselves lucky that we found it before anything major happened,” Foster said. “We got the people out of the building that the engineers deemed dangerous and we’re working on moving services.”
Foster said the process of moving services has been a bit chaotic in trying to move software, communications, and personnel. He said for now, the County Clerk’s office is stopping services until it can move to the new archives building a few miles up the road. The goal is to have everything up and running by Monday.
Foster said the next step for the old courthouse is to shore up the damaged areas to allow engineers a safe space to get a closer look. He said once they know just what kind of damage they’re dealing with, they’ll move forward to see what’s next with bids and construction.
