Crossville city officials are warning residents of a potential scam asking for money via email.
City Manager Greg Wood said the emails contain a link to a malicious site that claims to be from the city.
“It’s an email that appears to come from the City of Crossville, but we don’t email bills out. It contains crossvilletn.gov, but it has a statement of commercial banking on it, a lot of letters and symbols that take you to a malicious site where they’re trying to scam you,” Wood said. “If you aren’t expecting an invoice from the City of Crossville for something or if you have a question about it, call us before you open it please.”
Wood said the city’s IT department was notified of the scam Thursday morning and acted quickly to avoid any potential damage.
“The big thing is and just in any situation, a lot of people try and do these invoices and you think it’s something legitimate,” Wood said. “That’s how they get past your firewall and get into your system. You’ve just got to be careful.”
Crossville Police began their ‘No Scam Zone’ initiative earlier this year to help area banks and businesses identify potential scams via email, phone, or text.
