Crossville is expanding its location options for the future indoor recreation center.
City Manager Greg Wood said property purchased on Webb Avenue has shown potential development issues. Wood said the city’s attorney will now pursue property on Main Street to increase the recreation center’s visibility.
“One big reason for doing the recreation center in the first place is our folks go to school, get educated and then go work some place else,” Wood said. “We’re looking for amenities to make sure that people have a reason to stay in Crossville long-term, raise their families and attract additional businesses.”
Wood said if the property negotiations go through, the facility would be located across the street from City Hall. Wood said the city has location flexibility because the building still has not been designed.
“We know what amenities we’re looking at putting in,” Wood said. “An indoor pool, an outdoor pool, exercise areas, meeting rooms. One of the big problems in Crossville is unless you’re in like a church league or something like that, there’s no place to do sports activities indoors during winter time. So this would definitely do that. I’ve already had folks calling me telling me that they’re going to be at the pool every day if we open it.”
Wood said the door is not closed on using the Webb Avenue property. He said there are ways to navigate some of the costs if it was the final site decided on.
“On the Webb property there is at least one stream but it’s a large enough property if we do end up going with that,” Wood said. “You could work it in and make it a hiking trail as well as a recreation center.”
The Webb Avenue property is 24 acres for $540,000. He said if negotiations are successful, a special called meeting will happen to discuss the offers with the city council.
