Crossville is reevaluating its noise ordinance to come up with a policy that fits across the city.
Police Department Administrative Captain Brian Eckelson said there is not a root cause to changing noise rules. However, he said it was time to make sure policy was in line with other cities.
Eckelson said the decibel levels allowed would vary based on zoning.
“We’re trying to find a happy medium between the amount of volume and the distance,” Eckelson said. “If you’ve got a business that has heavy equipment, if you’re 100 yards away from that and there’s a housing area. How much noise, what time of day?”
Eckelson said the department has purchased handheld sound meters to gauge what noise levels are coming out of businesses and venues. He said an ideal decibel level has not been agreed on because it can vary from city to city when they look at models for enforcement.
“Then again, if you’ve got an outdoor music venue, sometimes it with be eight, nine, ten o’clock at night before a concert is over or something of that nature,” Eckelson said. “So we’re trying to get it as fair as we can get it, without being too limiting or restrictive but also giving people some peace and quiet in their homes.”
Eckelson said he imagines law enforcement and the city will meet and look over several proposed changes before selecting one to move forward with. He said that input and models from other cities are used in the process.
