A Crossville non-profit that assists low-income families own a home has received $640,000 in federal grant funding.
Creative Compassion Deputy Director Mark Baldwin said the need for the assistance grows more and more everyday.
“This grant is going to help us be able to help even more folks obtain that dream of having their own home,” Baldwin said. “It is the largest home grant we have ever secured for Creative Compassion, so we are very excited and ready to put it to work.”
The grant funding assists prospective homeowners with land purchases, closing costs and mortgage funding. Baldwin said the home building process is similar to a traditional loan.
“Most of our clients don’t qualify for a traditional home loan, so we can help them with their home payments,” Baldwin said. “If its going to be too much to pay, we can help them find a grant.”
Baldwin said unlike other housing non-profits, Creative Compassion use a contractor. Baldwin said 3-bed, 2-bath homes are most commonly built, and home owners get to be a part of the design process.
Baldwin said you can apply for some of the grant funding by visiting the organization’s website.
