Cookeville Woman Brings Meth, Cocaine into Jail

A Cookeville woman faces multiple charges after bringing methamphetamine and cocaine into the Putnam County Jail Tuesday.

Authorities charged 40-year-old Rachel Smith with the introduction of contraband into a penal institution along with a theft of property charge.

Rachel Smith faces charges of theft of property and introduction of contraband into a penal institution.

Officers initially stopped the 2008 Dodge Avenger with no tag illumination. Officers identified Smith as the driver.

The tag on the vehicle did not match the vehicle. Arrest warrants indicate that the vehicle was reported stolen to the White County Sheriff’s Department in July 2018.

Officers arrested Smith for possession of stolen property. Prior to entry of the Putnam County Jail, officers asked Smith if she had anything illegal on her. Smith stated no.

During a search inside the jail, authorities found a crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine, a white powder believed to be cocaine and several pills.

Officers booked Smith into the Putnam County Jail on a $25,000 bond. Smith has since posted bail.
