Cookeville Water Continuing To Search For Non-Obvious Leaks After Flash Freeze Weather

Cookeville Water Department continuing to address minor service lines and water main breaks following this weekend’s flash freeze.

Environmental Engineer Matthew Phillips said the department is receiving multiple reports of leaks on the private side of water meters. He said many utility districts the city services are also reporting issues of leaks or main breaks.

“And they have already or are in the process of repairing those,” Phillips said. “One of our utility districts is currently consuming three times the amount of water than normal due to major main breaks in their system. So with that being said. our water plant is currently operating at almost full capacity in order to  help overcome those leaks while still providing the normal daily demand that’s required.”

Phillips said crews are still searching for non-obvious breaks in the system. He said the biggest issue was on a 10-inch main break outside of Big Lots on South Jefferson Avenue.

Phillips said as of Wednesday, there have not been serious complaints made about the leaks affecting service to customers.

“We do ask that if anybody sees a water leak such as water running down the road, water in your neighbor’s yard, water where it normally wouldn’t be,” Phillips said. “We ask you not to call 911 but call and report it to the Water Department at 931-520-5239.”

The City of Sparta is also experiencing water main issues. The City issued a statement that there had been multiple water main breaks resulting in low water pressure. Crews are working diligently to address the issues.
