Cookeville To Save Money On Roberts-Matthews Highway Bridge Project

Cooekville officials will consider an amended agreement with White County Thursday for repairs to the Roberts-Matthews Highway Bridge over Falling Water River.

Cookeville and White County have joint ownership in the bridge. City Public Works Director Greg Brown said the original 2017 agreement required Cookeville to pay $269,100 for the project.

“After the passage of the IMPROVE Act, White County can use those funds to pay for the entire 20-percent match. In order to do that, they have to give up a third of their Bridge Grant Program funds that they receive every year for the next 14-years,” Brown said. “TDOT  estimates that total amount for the two bridges they have to be $231,924. So half of that would be what we’re interested in on this bridge, so we would split that $115,962 between us.

Brown said the amended agreement means Cookeville will save a little more than $211,100. Cookeville City Council will consider the amended inter-local agreement at 5:30 p.m. Thursday inside city hall.

Crews began working to repair the bridge earlier this month.
