The Cookeville Police Department has received another round of Highway Safety Office grant funding.
Police Chief Randy Evans said $15,000 will go to the Cookeville High School (CHS) T.E.S.T Club.
“The T.E.S.T Club grant, they’ll (Highway Safety Office) pay for part of the Highway Safety Office rally at the high school,” Evans said. “Some students will go to some highway safety conferences and represent the TEST Club. All of that is paid for through this grant.”
T.E.S.T stands for Traffic Education Saves Teens. Evans said the club is one of the largest at CHS and focuses on educating teens about safe driving.
Evans said the department will use another $45,000 for purchasing equipment and conducting DUI saturation.
“The grants pay for some training, some DUI saturation patrol, overtime, and equipment,” Evans said. “We’ll buy radar guns and computers. I think one year we bought that message board trailer that’s got the radar in it. Those are the kind of items that we usually purchase.”
The Cookeville Police Department typically receives the grant funding each fall. The Cookeville City Council meets Thursday to consider entering a contract to receive the funding.
