Cookeville Puppy Sanctuary Takes In Abused Memphis Puppy

A Cookeville non profit took in a Memphis puppy following an animal abuse case last week.

Safe Haven Puppy Sanctuary Treasurer Janet Gregg said the puppy’s ears were cut off with scissors.

“This man was being investigated for some drug charges,” Gregg said. “When the police went to his home, the gentleman said something about could he bring his puppy in the house. That’s when they discovered this puppy who was estimated to be 6 weeks old with his ears cut off. He was confiscated and taken to the Memphis shelter.”

Memphis police entered Nakial Betts’ residence with a narcotics search warrant. After entering, they saw the dog had no ears. Betts said he sterilized a pair of scissors to cut off the puppy’s ears and used peroxide and neosporin on the wound.

The sanctuary named the puppy Maximus and created a Facebook page for him. Gregg said Maximus is recovering.

“We have a foster that’s just on the other side of the bridge in Arkansas that has the puppy in her care right now and he’s doing very very well. So we’re really happy. Once he’s old enough and strong enough he will be available for adoption,” Gregg said.
