Cookeville Public Works is currently awaiting approval for a T-DOT Surface Transportation Block Grant to install sidewalks on Interstate Drive.
Public Works Director Jeff Brown said the new sidewalk will stretch from Willow Avenue to the west side of Jefferson between Interstate Drive and Walnut Avenue.
“There is a lot of pedestrian traffic through that area,” Brown said. “We are just trying to make a continuous route that will go from one end to the other to walk to the hotels, restaurants and businesses over there.”
Construction for the $900,000 project is expected to begin next year. Brown said T-DOT will reimburse the city for the funds spent on the project if T-DOT approves the plans.
Once the city receives approval, Brown said the city will acquire any property needed for the sidewalks. There is no time frame for the completion of the project.
