Cookeville is continuing to make trees available to the community to regrow what was lost in the March Tornado.
500 trees are available and all Putnam County residents can come and select as many trees as they need Saturday. Cookeville Urban Forester Jaime Nunan said these giveaways have given residents a chance to start fresh and create new memories.
“I’ve talked to a lot of people who have been planting trees in some of the memorial groves that we’ve come from that’s helped a lot of people heal,” Nunan said. “To be able to plant something and watch it grow in a place that’s been so traumatic for a lot of people. So it’s really cool and we’re glad to be a part of that.”
Nunan said that rain or shine the tree giveaway will go on Saturday. Nunan said there are seven tree types, ranging from four to 10 feet tall.
“A lot of people lost a lot of tree canopy with the tornado,” Nunan said. “So we’re just trying to get that back. I know a lot of people lost family trees and trees on their property that meant a lot to them.”
Putnam Residents can start picking up trees from 8:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the Public Works Department, 1115 East Spring Street. White Dogwood, Kwanzan Cherry, Yoshino Cherry, Tulip Poplar, Red Maple, Willow Oak and Shumard Oak will be available.
