Cookeville Museum Docent Need Almost Filled

The Cookeville Museum has nearly reached it’s docent limit.

Museums Manager Beth Thompson said nine docents were added. They have 25 volunteers and three staff members.

“We have had a really great response to our call for docents, so we got lots of volunteers that we’re in the process of training right now. A big thank you to our community for that, but keep an eye out because we’re always looking,” Thompson said.

Thompson added the Cookeville’s History Museum sees over 5,000 visitors a year and the Depot Museum sees over 15,000.

The History Museum holds relics from fossils to photos displaying Putnam’s past. Thompson said she’s happy Cookeville cares about its history.

“The Depot Museum, the depot itself was built in 1909, so it’s the biggest artifact that we have. Everything in the Depot Museum is basically Tennessee central railroad related, so [there’s artifacts dating] from about 1909 to 1968,” Thompson said.

Future events include women’s suffrage history this summer, and a storytelling competition in May.
