Cookeville Man Hides Under Kitchen Sink to Avoid Child Abuse Charge

Cookeville Police Department charged Anthony Todd Swindle, 24, with child abuse and possession of a controlled substance.

A Cookeville officer responded to a complaint from a witness who saw a two-year-old with a black eye and a bump on his forehead.

According to the report, the officer located Swindle underneath the kitchen sink holding a bag. The bag contained a plastic scale, baggies, and approximately one ounce of a leafy green substance.

The child’s mother said she heard a noise in the bedroom and tried to enter, but Swindle would not let her into the room. The mother said she entered the room and saw the child laying half on and half the bed crying.

After Miranda rights were given, Swindle said he corrected the child for not wiping after a bowel movement. Swindle said when he pushed the child’s head down it struck the side of the bed.

Swindle also admitted to selling marijuana.

The report said the observed injuries to the child were consistent with the information provided by the original complainant.

Cookeville Police also charged Swindle with violation of bond conditions for a domestic assault charge in May. Bail conditions forbade Swindle from contacting the child’s mother and to vacate their common residence.

Authorities checked Swindle into Putnam County Jail on a 15 thousand dollar bail.
