Cookeville Leisure Services hoping to help kids brush up on lacrosse skills at its youth clinic this Saturday morning.
Cookeville Lacrosse Club Director Kurt Snider said that the clinic for 2nd graders to fourth-grade boys will cover the basics of lacrosse.
“Catching, throwing, scooping, and cradling,” Snider said. “Lacrosse is played with a stick, it’s a long stick about 33 inches with a net at the end of it of stringing or webbing as we call it. And you throw that ball in the goal, that’s the object of the game. But those four skills are what we’ll concentrate on.”
Snider said that the sport has grown in popularity over the last two decades since he started the club. He said that through this clinic, they hope to get kids the skills they need before they start playing in middle and high school.
“To get them introduced to the game at an earlier age,” Snider said. “Right now we have middle and high school programs so we’re teaching the game to fifth graders and up. And they could excel so much faster if they had those fundamental skills before they got to those programs.”
Snider said that through this clinic, they’re hoping they can spread the love of the game.
I think that first and foremost it gets the kids off the couch and moving,” Snider said. “It’s a beautiful free-flowing game, it has a lot of constant moving. So it gets kids moving, it’s great for their health. It’s a team sport so there is camaraderie and the community of being on a team. It just has endless benefits if you ask me.”
Snider said that those interested in participating in the clinic at Cane Creek Recreation Center can register through the Leisure Services Department’s website. He said that registration is $10. Equipment will be provided, but no goggles or mouthguards are necessary.
