Putnam County authorities have arrested a Cookeville High School student for threatening to shoot up the school.
A statement released by Principal Max Petett Friday said the arrest took place late Thursday night at the student’s home.
According to the release, the student was overheard by another making threats to bring an assault rifle to school.
The student then told their parents who in turn contacted teachers at the high school. The report was passed along to school administrators and the school resource officers to conduct an investigation.
Authorities were able to locate the student and place them in custody. According to the release, SROs have confirmed the student did make violent threats towards the school.
The student will not be allowed to return to school until a threat assessment is conducted. Petett said he and other school officials commend the SRO for their work in investigating the threats.
The arrest comes just days after Putnam County school officials asked students, faculty, and parents to report signs of suspicious behavior.
