Cookeville Council Approved Construction Bid On 10th Street

Cookeville City Council approved the construction bid Thursday night to widen 10th Street from Wilson Avenue to Fisk Road.

The second phase of the five-lane widening project will begin around March 1. It includes sidewalks on both sides of the street as well as curb and guttering. Public Works Director Blake Mayo said the city received two bids and accepted the bid from Rogers Group for $7.86 million.

“It came in better than what we expected with what we saw the trends with construction prices,” Mayo said.

Utility movement will begin soon and will continue weather-permitting through the winter.

The city accepted the base bid from the contractor instead of a bid based on current oil prices.

A third phase to widen 10th Street from Fisk Road through the congested commercial district may not happen in the near future. City Manager James Mills said at a spring work session the complexity of obtaining right-of-ways in that area combined with the tightness of the roadway would make the project very expensive.
