Cookeville Budgeting $200K To Redo Recycling Building On Lowe Ave.

City of Cookeville budgeting $200,000 to redo its current recycling building at the corner of Stevens Street and Lowe Avenue.

City Manager James Mills said that it is one of the main recycling locations in the city and there is a need to beautify it. He said they would like to get the project out for construction sometime early next year.

“It’s been brought to our attention and we’ve been made aware that it is a less than attractive location, it’s not been kept up the way it should have been,” Mills said. “So it’s a priority of the city to try to improve the appearance of that location.”

Mills said they have also had issues with individuals illegally dumping waste at the back part of the building because of the way it is configured. Mills said the buildings also store equipment for the public works department such as mowing equipment, so there is a need to make sure the building and property is maintained.

Mills said to address both the cosmetic and illegal dumping issues, they plan to remodel the buildings at that same site. He said the next step will be the actual design which will occur throughout the winter.

“It’s not a large project but it is something that we want to do to beautify that intersection,” Mills said.
