Cookeville Applies For Grant To Update Pedestrian Signals

The City of Cookeville will seek out grant funding for a project to improve traffic safety.

Public Works Director Greg Brown said the funding would address pedestrian signals and push buttons.

“If we’re successful in obtaining the grant, I would like to use it to replace all our pedestrian signals and push buttons that do not currently meet ADA standards,” Brown said. “In our recent completed ADA transition plan, that was one of the items we were not up to speed on.”

Cookeville City Council voted to apply for TDOT’s Traffic Signal Modernization Program Grant during Thursday nights meeting.

“It’s a 100-percent state funded and state contracted grant,” Brown said. “The state has capped the grant at $250,000.”

TDOT has set a goal to begin the traffic signal upgrades within 12 months of the project selection.
