Contract for Cumberland School Director Sent Back To Committee

The Cumberland County Board of Education has voted against a three-year contract extension for Director of Schools Janet Graham.

Board member Jim Inman said he couldn’t support the contract until the board surveyed faculty and staff.

“Since the information about this has been out in the public, I’ve been receiving phone calls, emails, and texts, asking me to vote no on this contract,” Inman said. “I’ve been told that we have a moral problem within our school system. I don’t know if we do or not, to be honest with you. I would like for us to do a survey to find out if we do have a moral problem.”

Board members voted down a motion to conduct a survey, but did approve sending the contract back to committee for further study.

“I’m uncomfortable voting on this now as well,” board member Stace Karge said. “I just don’t think we have enough information right now, and I would like to be able to get that.”

The school board’s contract committee recommended a three-year extension earlier this year.

Graham’s current contract expires January 31, 2020.
