The Algood Head Start Center is asking for community help to provide the best Christmas possible for kids.
Center Supervisor Bridget Murphy said they have 131 kids to serve this holiday. Murphy said for 17 years the community has rallied to helps kids and families who need extra support.
“It’s magical, it’s something that not every child gets to experience,” Murphy said. “We want to try and give that to our families and to our children. Sometimes the parents have a really hard time providing for the kids. It’s just a special time of the year so we want to make it as special as we can for them.”
Murphy said people can donate outfits and toys for kids now, even with Christmas over a month away. She said the center tries to deliver a Christmas that gives a little bit of everything that a kid and family could need.
“What we try to do is do every child a pair of shoes, a coat, an outfit and a toy,” Murphy said. “We also try and get them a stocking. We have got names here if people in the community want to come get names.”
Murphy said people can make monetary donations if they are unsure of what to buy or do not have the time to do extra shopping. She said this is the time of year to remember that feeling on Christmas morning when we were kids.
“Getting up on Christmas morning and having that one special toy or seeing my stocking filled,” Murphy said. “I know that we live in a community that really loves our children because I see that. So that’s what it means to these kids, it will bring a lifetime of memories.”
The deadline to donate is December 3.
Murphy said to donate, anyone can either call the Algood LBJC Head Start by phone or on Facebook. She said the center will also have a toy drive on November 18.
