Clay County Home Grant Applications To Go Out In January

Clay County will begin accepting applications for its home improvement grant program next year.

Mayor Dale Reagan said residents received more information about the program during an information meeting earlier this week.

“We had probably 40 folks that came out and got the information that they needed,” Reagan said. “We’re going to start the application process in January for people to start signing up. Hopefully we can get some much needed help to the people who need help on their homes.”

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency awarded the $500,000 grant to Clay County in July. The monies will be used to rehabilitate homes for low-income individuals and families.

Reagan said he’s hoping the money can serve up to 10-residents, but that may not be possible.

“It just depends on severity of each home,” Reagan said. “It’s a scoring system that they use. I don’t know if it will be a state inspector or a federal home inspector that will determine which homes receive repairs.”

Fentress, Jackson, and Van Buren counties plus the city of Spencer have all received similar grants from the THDA in the last year. The THDA has awarded nearly $2 million in grant funding to Upper Cumberland communities in that time frame.
