The Crossville Fire Department has a new chief with Chris South taking over operations.
South previously served as deputy chief and has been with the department since 1994. South said the accomplishment achieves a long term goal of leading.
“As a firefighter and growing up in this for over 30 years, I have tried to make preparations to lead the department, and by finally obtaining that I kind of been able to reach the goals I set for myself and very excited to have an opportunity to lead the fire service in the city of Crossville.”
South has a bachelor’s degree in fire administration and recently obtained chief fire officer national accreditation. South said reducing city insurance ratings and creating a new fire station are two ideas he wants to explore under his new role.
“I want to continue to obviously protect (Firefighters) and provide them the opportunities to be successful in their job,” South said. “We are looking to the future. We are looking at the potential of reduction of insurance ratings and just continuing to grow with the community. Currently, we have two stations, and obviously as our community continues to grow, there will be the need to expand our resources.”
South replaces Mike Turner who will serve as assistant chief until his retirement later this year. South said the Crossville fire department is one of the best trained services one can find.
“We are extremely fortunate in the city of Crossville to have what I would consider one of the highest trained and best group of firefighters and professionals we could possibly have,” South said.
Mayor James Mayberry swore in South Monday night.
