Calls to Genesis House by victims of domestic violence have nearly doubled in the last month.
That according to Denise Dillon, Program Director for Genesis House, serving victims of abuse in Clay, Jackson, Macon, Putnam, Pickett, Overton, Smith, Dekalb and White Counties.
Economic stress and stay at home orders are contributing factors, Dillon said.
“I had an incident the other day that a lady told me you know that her husband usually goes to the bars, drinks a little, then comes home, and now the bars are closed so he’s drinking so much that he don’t have to worry about driving anymore, so therefore he drinks until he gets violent, so she is not safer at home at this time.”
The Genesis House, Dillon said, is working in overdrive and is at maximum capacity, but they will help any victim of domestic or sexual violence find a safe place, even if that means sending them to another state.
The Genesis House is in need of donations of non-perishable goods, hygiene items, tax-deductible monetary donations and gift cards and gas cards. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 1180, Cookeville, 38503 or call 526-5197 to arrange pickup.
