Byrdstown Expects Record Turnout For Run/Walk

Byrdstown expects a record turnout for the city’s 5K/3K and Walk to benefit St. Jude Saturday.

Mayor Sam Gibson said so far over 130 people have signed up to run or walk. Gibson said more people are participating in the event because of the proceeds going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“In the past, we have sent like $15,000 give or take a little bit each year to St. Jude’s,” Gibson said. “This year we are looking to send anywhere from $35,000 to $45,000 to St. Jude’s here in a little town like Byrdstown and that’s because of all the contributors and our volunteers have gotten out and worked and got people to donate.”

Gibson said a local couple has pledged to make a donation that matches the amount raised from the 5k. Gibson said you can sign-up to participate online now or in the hour before the event Saturday morning.

“You know you can come out and participate in a 5k run walk,” Gibson said. “And yet realize that the money and everything is donated is going to go to a good cause. If we are going to donate our money and we are going to contribute to things what better thing could it be than to St. Judes Children’s Hospital. They do such good things there.”

The event will be Saturday with start time at 8am across from City Hall.
