Burks Elementary and Monterey High School are taking donations to help schools affected by the flooding in Waverly.
Burks Elementary Principal Heather Tinch said her school is taking school supply donations until Friday. Tinch said the idea started when one of the teachers showed pictures of the devastation that occurred in her mother’s classroom at Waverly Junior High.
“Seeing that, I felt helpless,” Tinch said. “If we were in that situation, I think you would just be thinking where do we go from here?” Tinch said. “So we’re very fortunate that people in this community truly want to help other people.”
Tinch said the school wanted to gather supplies before Fall Break so her teacher, Haley Davis could deliver the supplies to Waverly.
“We didn’t do it right away, because like we saw with the tornadoes, there’s often times a lot of donations up front,” Tinch said. “We gave it just a few weeks to let things settle down. So we decided this week before Fall Break would be a good time to sponsor a school supply drive.”
She said all supply donations can be brought to the Burks Elementary front office. Tinch said they narrowed down what they were looking for to include:
Number 2 pencils
Pens
Highlighters
Colored Pencils
Markers
Spiral notebooks
Folders
Binders
Dry Erase markers
Tinch said if people do not get a chance to donate supplies, The Montery High School Wildcats will be taking monetary donations on Friday night to send home with the Waverly Central High School Wildcats after their football match up.
