The City of Crossville hired a new police chief Friday afternoon.
Tennessee Highway Patrol Captain Jessie Brooks has accepted the position, pending a background check and physical.
City Manager Greg Wood said Brooks had recommendations from the highest levels of state government.
“What was more important to me is that he had troopers come in and tell me what a great job he had done and how he had turned around a couple of divisions in the highway patrol,” Wood said. “It was a tough decision, but I felt like he was the right guy that we needed at this point in time.”
Wood said Brooks should begin serving as chief by the end of the month.
A total of 17 candidates applied for the position and a panel narrowed that list down to eight finalist.
“There were a lot of standouts and we had excellent candidates,” Wood said. “I’m looking forward to getting the department on a great track and doing the best we can for the city of Crossville.”
Former chief Dave Beaty was fired in early August after a year at the helm and 30 years total with the department. Interim Chief Chris Kendrick has served in the position since then and will continue to do so until Brooks takes over.
