Broadband Expansion Work Progressing In Putnam County

Broadband expansion in Putnam County is underway, with work in Monterey just about completed.

Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter Twin Lakes was awarded a state grant last year to expand almost $33 million worth of telephone and high-speed internet to everyone in the county. He said they started in the Pfeiffer Mountain and Dry Valley area and continue working east.

“And then once they finish those two areas they’ll be working northward and southward as they go to finish it,” Porter said. “They thought it’d take about 24 months when they originally started. But they think now it could potentially be done faster depending on the weather. But they’re full speed ahead right now working on that project.”

Porter said the broadband expansion is just one of several projects the county is working on to expand services and utilities throughout the county. He said this work continues to boost Putnam County’s place as a hub of the Upper Cumberland.

Porter said that he wants to get things done quickly and get them done right. He said that he is excited about all the projects.

“I feel like everyone in Putnam County should have access to water, electricity, telephone, and good internet service,” Porter said. “Right now there are citizens across the county that don’t have access to water and there’s a lot of folks that don’t have access to good internet. So we’re hoping with this money it’s going to be a huge deal for Putnam County and we’re going to make sure that everybody does have access to those.”
